I MANAGED TO FALL ASLEEP around three a.m., finally having cried myself out.
When the alarm woke me, I was right to be reluctant to look in the mirror. My hair was a disaster, and the rest of me wasnât much better. My eyes and face were red and swollen, and my lower region wasnât feeling so hot, either.
However, a hot shower can do a world of good for a distressed soul. Add some tea and Nutella on a bagel, and youâve got some progress.
I made my flight. I did my work in D.C. I called, texted, and had phone sex with Andrew. I managed to stay in the moment instead of thinking of Jamie most of the time. What can I say? Dirty talk gets me just about every time.
Maria and I talked several times, besides the countless texts we sent to each other. Still, it was a bit of a shock to realize that the phone Iâd had set to silent during my meeting was full of texts and voice mails from her, my father, and Lisa.
They all pretty much said the same thing.
Jamie had escaped.
Fortunately, I was back in my room, so my shaking legs could give way and the rest of me could collapse on the bed. My hands trembled so badly that I had difficulty with the phoneâs screen.
Maria was worried, but elated. My father was worried, but beyond furious. Lisa was just worried.
And me?
I never expected to see Jamie again. I mean, I dreamed so many times that he had come back and taken me in his arms, vowing that heâd made a mistake, that he would never let me go again.
But they were just dreams, even if a huge part of me wished they were true.
I was startled when there was a firm knocking on my door. It was probably Jessica, the newest member of my team. Sheâd been full of questions in our meetings, and also had a habit of dropping by my room to ask even more. I liked her, but the girl was about as dumb as a box of rocks. However, she was the ownerâs niece. Regardless how I felt about her abilities, I was stuck with her for the time being.
I opened the door, and was greeted by yet another shock.
Jamie.
I drank in his appearance. Had he been in some kind of stasis? His dark hair was as short as always, his blue eyes were just as cold, and his jaw was just as shadowed by stubble. Jamie looked as athletic, as tall, as smoldering as I remembered. My mind screamed danger, but my traitorous body and heart, oh my heart, longed for him.
âJamie?â I whispered.
He smirked. âTell me you missed me.â
âI miss you. Every day,â I told the figment of imagination. I had finally cracked. It figures it would be over him. My fingertips touched the bristles on his cheek. âYou feel so real.â
Jamieâs smile faded. âThatâs because I am. Would you believe I was on my way to tell you Iâd made a mistake when your dad got me?â
Tears were welling in my eyes.
